by different looking chip you mean different layout of components on the board, right?

You likely had a reference design one and the new one isn't reference design. (or the other way around or neither were reference design).

If you give me the model number of the gpu and the water block you're using, i can tell if they're compatible. Or you can just try it. Just make sure all the parts that need to be cooled are making contact with the block. (gpu, ram modules, voltage regulators, maybe other things depending on the waterblock)

Has nothing do with the board which is exactly the same but the gpu size and look is changed. It looks exactly like my roomates 680 gpu. I can't find another 580 Luke it anywhere. I cleaned off gpu and it says gf110 but does not look antithetical 580 which is a big sillver gpu. It's smaller and matches 680 almost perfectly

.... the gpu itself is different? that's weird.

Do they both say gf110? If so, probably just a revision. Same chip, different heat spreader on it. I can't find anything online about it though...

Do you have the model number of the cards? like EVGA xxxx or something. Maybe i can find something.

aight, it's just missing the heat spreader. There wouldn't be a problem except your wc block likely won't make contact, which would make it useless.

Here's a thread on it: http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=1232317&mpage=1&pr...

Close to the bottom, an evga rep says you can send him an email to get your card swapped. I'd try that.
