My buffalo hard drive keeps asking for it to be formatted

my buffalo external hard drive keeps asking me to format it

If this is your first use of the drive then this is normal. Once formatting has completed you can use the drive.

If as I suspect this not the first use, it sounds like the partition table has corrupted or you maybe looking at a general failure. Neither is very good news for your data.
