Hello everyone,

I am looking to do do a little CPU upgrade.

I currently have an AMD Phenom ii x2 555 Black Edition overclocked to 3.6 GHZ.

I was wondering a few things I would like you to help me with...

Is it worth upgrading to one of these - AMD Bulldozer FX-4100 x4 - or the - Phenom II X4 980 -

And second, which one do I go for if I do?

Thanks very much in advance

The phenom 980 is a good upgrade to the x2. The 4100 is slower than the 980 generally so I would stay away from that unless its significantly cheaper.

Have you tried to unlock your 555? if not, its like a free upgrade if it works out. the deactivated cores in the cpu can be reactivated if there are so flaws.

Thank you for that very quick reply.

Yes I have tried indeed, twice and with bad consequences! I had to reset the Cmos each time after attempting to unlock it... big shame.

So OK, the 980, would it be a highly noticeable upgrade from the 555?

Again thank you

Depending on what you are doing the 980 should be a good upgrade. As whatsthatnoise also said, the lower modeled phenom IIx4s like the 965BE are pretty much just as good if you overclock as most of them hits about 3.9 to 4.0 on air.
