I have the following system:
i5-2400
H61M
4 GB DDR3-1333
HD6850
and a 1680x1050 screen
rosewill R102 case (9.25" graphics card length, max. my 6850 at 9.1" is tight)
Corsair CX 430 v1. (28a on 12v rail, only 1 year old)

I'm thinking of upgrading to a 7850, since it fits in my small case and within my 28amp power budget but my motherboard is limited to only PCie 2.0.

most comparisons between the two show a sizable change (+10-20 fps), but how much of that is the PCIe 3.0? I'm not planning a major upgrade (mobo/cpu) until at least Haswell in mid 2013, possibly not until early 2014.

it it worth upgrading to the 7850 without PCIe 3.0?

From everything ive read the 7850 doesnt even come close to maxing out PCIe 2.0. Also, at your resolution i dont think its worth upgrading, the benchmarks youve seen most likely were 1920x1080 at the least probably. I could be wrong but at your resolution I doubt youd see more in performance aside from maybe bf3 and equal.

The current gen 3.0 cards cannot fully saturate the bandwidth of PCI-E 2.0 so going for a 3.0 card just because it's 3.0 isn't a good choice. However the 7850 is considerably faster than the 6850 making it a worthwhile upgrade over the 6850.

My advice would be to stick it out for another year and wait for Haswell.Upgrade everything and get a 2nd gen 3.0 card.

the major place I'd expect to see improvement is Second Life - in a busy sim, I can be as low as 12 fps.

If your upgrading everything when Haswell comes out you might as well hold off on GPU upgrade till then.

I agree the prices will go down by then and as the rest of the 6xx series of cards comes out. Saves you money and possibly can get a better GPU (if the 6xx series is better, not trying to say it will be but it may).

Most of the reviews were using pci 2.0 so theres no difference between what they get and you where that is concerned. 2.0 is plenty bandwidth for any gaming card today so the 7850 should be no problem.

haswell is at least a year away. Waiting that long to upgrade the gpu doesn't make much sense. by then the 8XXX and 7XX will be out.

might be worth to wait a month since there should be an immanent price drop from the nvidia cards coming and the 28nm goes into production.

UPGRADING:
That's a pretty expensive upgrade for a small amount of improvement.

My advice is to:
a) WAIT for prices to drop and get an HD7000/GTX600 series with DOUBLE the performance of your current card, or

b) bite the bullet and buy the $500 GTX680 (when available)

You can get great ATX cases like the Antec ONE which also has two fans for as little as $60.

That Power Supply might work with the GTX680. There's enough Amps on the +12V rail. The wattage is a little below recommend but based on the rest of your system it looks like it would work if you didn't crazy overclock your CPU.

As per toms hardware graphics chart it is not recommended to upgrade for 1 generation behind.
You will only notice difference in the next generation.

As I was saying earlier if your planning on going for a Haswell build you might as well buy the next gen cards(GTX7xx series,AMD 8xxx series). That way you can make full use of the PCI-E 3.0.

i just bought a 7850 with a free dirt 3 game for 260. i plan to sell dirt 3 for 30 on ebay. 230 for a radeon 7850 will not be beat even after kepler is released.

But you didn't actually pay $230 for it though...It's a market ploy to make you feel like you got the better deal.
