A printer conundrum

Last response: in Digital Camera

I had to fit a new hard drive to my computer.

I installed all my programs - including Photoshop.

My first print from my R200 was very dark - it looked o.k. on the screen.
I swapped to my C86 - the print was normal.

To get the R200 to print normally I have to make the picture on the screen
very light.

What's happened?

John

Many of the Epson printers drivers color rendition was broken in the XP
service packs. First thing to do is go to the Epson site and get the latest
version of the printer drivers.

Did you install the printer drivers from the supplied CD and have XP with
SP2? If so, you need updated drivers from the Epson website.

Calibrate the printer to match the screen?

Or vice-versa. All LCDs that I've seen come pre-set to be unbelievably
bright, to where you *have* to have a very dark image to look right. Once
he gets the screen calibrated, then he can use the printer/paper profiles to
get the image where it needs to be for printing.

I don't know what caused the problem but the default ICC file installed
by the Epson driver should not be used. So, I can't help you to print a
good web page, for instance.

However, if you want to print photos, install P.I.M. II Plug-in v. 2.2.
It will only be installed IF you have Photoshop CS and below (not CS2)
or Photoshop Elements in your computer.

Here is the instruction to get the perfect print from Photoshop (maybe
Elements as well) after you have PIM installed:

1. select menu "file -> print with preview", Check, "Scale to Fit Media"
if you want.
2. in "color handling," select "Let Photoshop Determine Colors"
3. in "Printer Profile," choose the paper that you will be using, for
instance, "SPR200 Premium Glossy"
4. in "Render Intent," select "Relative Colorimetric," "Black Point
compensation", CHECKED. [sometimes, "prerceptural" works better]
5. goto the printer driver control panel [click "page Setup..." and then
"Printer", then select the Epson printer, and click "Properties..."]
6. Select the correct paper, e.g. "Premium Glossy Photo Paper".
7. in Color Management, choose "ICM", check "No Color Adjustment"
8. Click OKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOK and print.

There are a lot of settings (things like monitor calibration, etc.) that
get saved on hard drive. If you replace the drive and re-install all
the programs, you loose all those settings. Unfortunately, most
applications do not come with sufficient manuals that document all these
'settings' files. Check all the 'options' settings on all programs that
you use for photo editing, as well as any 'options' in both printer drivers.

Not clear if you had the R200 printing "properly" before your re-install.
Was it? If so were you running Adobe Gamma before and still are? Did you
have color management setup in PS or the R200 driver, remember you should
NOT do both. Are you using the proper profile for the paper you are using?
