Hi guys. I keep a close eye on hardware, but networking is not my stronger point. My wife is going to be telecommuting from here (San Diego) to her dad's office in Honolulu. According to the setup her dad has naw, he says we need to get a static IP (because he has to manually input the "allowed" IPs in order to connect, and ours changes periodically). Can't we set up something better/cheaper/easier using a VPN tunnel, etc? Road Runner offers a static IP on their "Business Class" internet, which I'm sure is way beyond what we need. She's a CPA, and just needs to acess/transfer small files, and her "office" is the downstairs bedroom.
As an Electrician and Tom's Hardware reader for over 5 years, I can assure you our computers and home network are up to date & solidly constructed. I know there has to be better solutions for the long distance connection, though.
Thanks in advance, the Tom's Hardware community has always been great!
Check your IP address every couple days. If you're using a router, there is a good chance that your IP address might not be changing. It might be renewed for a couple days if you're using a router. That way, you could just use that IP to cure the problem for the time being.
Linksys offers some small office/home office equipment for setting up VPN connections, but the total cost might be around $300. The Honolulu office would require a linksys concentrator while the home office would require an End Point. I believe each run about $150 a piece.
You may also be able to contact your ISP and pay an additional $5/mo for a static IP. Upgrading to the business class normally means it costs a lot more, but it should also be tax deductable.
