No need for tri and quad SLI with a single monitor?

I've got a single 1920x1080 monitor and was wondering if I should go with three or four-way SLI GTX 680.

When you're using a single monitor, having only two flagship GPU's in SLI/CrossfireX is much more than enough GPU horsepower to handle any PC game on it's maximum graphical settings.

I was told that two GTX 680's will smoke ANY title out there on 1920x1080 using a single monitor.

According to these benchmarks, the performance increase in having more than two flagship GPU's in SLI/CrossfrieX is EXTREMELY small and completely unnoticeable.

Do 3-4 GPU's come into play @2560x1600 resolution? 1920x1080 is antiquated and will eventually be replaced by future 2160p HD.

Doubt it. You'll only see much difference as you move into 5760x1080.

^+1,scaling is poor in 3-way or 4-way setup.gtx 680 2-way SLi will easily max out any game at 1080p.your psu(TX850 will run 680 SLi fine but not 3-way)

Feeding a 1920x1080P monitor with SLI'd 680s is like trying to drink from a firehose.

yeah single 680 maxes out any game with very playable frame rates.

YOU ARE JOKING, AREN'T YOU??

You do, indeed, get the prize for the dumbest question....especially since you obviously did a bit of recent research in purchasing the 680 in the 1st place. Trully unbelievable!

Guys you should read the OP better :p  He asked about 1600p, not 1080p.

@OP: As I mentioned before, it's useless going more than 2-way SLI for anything that's less than 3 monitor gaming. Though, 3-way SLI would be a very nice match for 3x 1600p monitors. It would max EVERYTHING on 1080p. Getting fourth card is pretty useless, because scaling is pathetic, you get almost no boost.

Topic heading: No need for tri and quad SLI with a single monitor?

Primary question: I've got a single 1920x1080 monitor and was wondering if I should go with three or four-way SLI GTX 680.

....kinda (damn well) does lead us down the 'standard reply' route, even taking account of the last line/question.

Now, if the OP dropped the 1st two critically important questions.......well........that leaves a different (better/more accurate?) question. Damn, I've now got a headache :(

Anyway, we mean no real offense :)  :)

You may want to reread the OP again yourself... he asked about both, 1080p and 1600p.

Right, I'm off to the pub. :)

Invest in 30" monitor instead of getting 4 SLI. Two 680 will harness the 2560x1600 exceptionally well

For a 1920x1080 a 680gtx will max everygame for quite some times. The only reason to go even 2x 680gtx would be if you find one for sale later on so you don,t have to upgrade for a 780gtx or even a 880gtx.

2 and 3 GPU are for 2560x1600 and 3 monitor set-up. 3x 680gtx in a low resolution set-up would be insane money waisting.
