I posted here that I was trying to find a solution for carrying my pictures when
on my upcoming Germany trip. After much advice from you all I ordered an iPod
camera connector, which came yesterday.
I have an Olympus Camedia C765 Ultra Zoom, a 4 megapixel point and shoot with
a 10x optical zoom. The camer uses the xD picture card which is not supported
by the independent hard drive my husband has. It does, however, have a USB
connector for PC.
Hooking it up was fairly easy. I do have to remove my iPod from the case I keep
it in, and the small (1 by 1 by 1/8 inch) adapter fits right into the docking
socket on the bottom of the iPod. Then the USB from the camera fits on the
bottom of the adapter. I have to turn both iPod and camera on, and I have to
select the PC upload on the camera. At that point the iPod recognizes the
camera and provides the option to import photos.
Photo import is kind of slow. I uploaded 70 plus 4 megapixel images, and it
took about 5 minutes, maybe less. I wasn't timing it. The images are
immediately viewable on the iPod, and I was able to then synch the iPod, which
transferred all of the pictures to the Macintosh photo library easily. The
iPod then allowed me to delete the files from it, and I deleted the files from
the camera.
Mission accomplished. I can store about 12,000 photos on the 20+ GB left on
my 30 GB iPod photo, which should cover me for 9 weeks. Thanks all for your
advice, and I hope this feedback is useful to someone.

Very nice, but here for just 150 euro you can get a special 40 GB device
dedicated only to storing photos. If I had money for an ipod then I certainly
would not be getting one but a better camera than the Kodak CX 7300 I have
now.

I already had an iPod (my husband gave me one for my birthday) so that made
a difference to me.

if you already have an iPod then spending 30Euros seems like a better
proposition than spending 150 to me.
So thanks for that update Juliana. Think I'll get one and give it a go,
because even if I buy more memory cards, its a useful backup device whilst
away.
[Juliana, a review I read said it really used a lot of the iPod battery

I didn't download a full data card, I had a half full iPod battery and a fully
charged camera battery. The iPod was still showing half full after uploading,
and synching with my Macintosh. I won't know until the battery starts warning
me that it needs recharge exactly what effect it had. I'll also need to try
it with a full card.
It was, I will warn you, not fast.
I already had the ipod (not surprisingly) for music; my husband got me the iPod
photo because he wanted to give me the top of the line. Now we're both glad
he did.

I may not be worth the extra expense now, but with an xD <> CF
adapter the independent hard drive would be able to use xD cards.

That makes sense if the reason to have the iPod is just to storage photos
from a digital camera. If you also want a portable music player, the
equation changes. Also, the low cost portable photo storage devices that I
have seen don't have an image display capability. I like the ability to see
the images, even on a small screen, so that I can verify the transfer
before erasing the camera card.

Yes, indeed the reason for having the iPod was for a portable audio device.
The photo use was an afterthought; my husband wanted to get me a really nice
one, so he got me the Photo one. I was glad that I could use it this way.
