Do you guys think sending credit card numbers online is safe??? I was going to buy xbox live but now I'm not sure if I will buy it or not. Because we need a sent credit card #'s online to be able to play on xbox live. And people think it's safe but I don't think it is. We don't know, hackers might be able to get those numbers.

What do you guys think? Do I worry to much???

It's perfectly safe, and to demonstrate, send me your card number, expiry date, name, and mothers maiden name and I'll show you how safe it is.

seriously, most cards will issue a one time number for internet transactions for paranoid people.

You forgot to ask for the 3 digit security pin from the signature line on the back of the card.

If you're sending your credit card info online make sure you are in a secure site. Other wise don't do it. You're safer ordering online than giving your info over the phone.

one more thing that you may not realise is this.

in real life people steal your wallet, online people steal your credit card number. the risk is no greater online than walking to your store. infact you are more likely to die walking to your store (or driving) than get your credit card number stolen online.

the second thing is this.

CREDIT CARD NUMBERS GET STOLEN, however the bank companys such as Visa and Mastercard will very easily re-emburse you for any money you have lost this way. if your credit card number gets stolen online at a secure site, and for example $10K is taken if you provide proof and make sure you are very angry sounding about this, then the credit card company will pay you it back.

this last one is because the internet is the largest market for credit card companys, they get 3% on every transaction. if the internet were to be viewed as risky they would have a hard time earning money. hence issues are covered up by prompt fixing of fraud problems.

anyway i assure you that these two things make credit cards online a good and safe experience.

Based on the procedures I've seen at places my S.O.'s have worked, I'd say using a credit card online is safer than using it in a department store and dramatically more safe than using it anywhere that still uses the carbon paper credit card things.

Shrug. Easier ways to get CC#'s than trying to pick em off the wire. Actually the current prefered method is to get the persons SSN and get a few CC's in their name. They don't even know whats going on until the trail is long cold generally.

After spending years online and using my credit card weekly at the least, I've yet to ever have any problems or misuse.

lets say I bought a credit card then I put my number on xbox live. Then a hacker gets my number. Can I get my money back from the bank?

I'm worried to loose my money here. Hackers can do anything these days.

Reply to zemuron

I believe all credit card transactions on the net use 128 bit SSL encryption (impossible to break). There was a distributed computing effort to crack a single 64 bit encoded message that took thousands of computers a number of months to crack. 128 bit encryption would take a computer longer than the age of the universe to crack.

The only way a hacker is going to get your CC number is via a key logger (trojan), or by tricking you into thinking you're giving it to a reputable company when you're really giving it to them.

Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.

Yeah but what about XBOX LIVE. Does it have 128 bit encryption?

What's a "key logger (trojan)"???

Reply to zemuron

A key logger is a program that a hacker installs on your computer to record all the key strokes of your keyboard. So when you enter your credit card number, that's saved and transmitted.

I don't know exactly how the xbox live works, but I'm sure it doesn't send your credit card number every time you want to play. It probably uses 128 bit encryption to sign you up for an account, then after that you just have a sign in code. If someone gets that, then the worst they can do is use your xbox live time. Your credit card number will only be transmitted the one time so they know who to bill, and after that it never gets sent again.

Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.

Make sure it is a CREDIT CARD. Not a DEBIT CARD from your bank account.

Credit cards are set up so you can dispute any charge placed with them. And get your money back.

Debit cards take money directly from your bank account and is non recoverable.

Do not use a combined DEBIT/CREDIT card from your bank.

I aint signing nothing!!!

Reply to Rick_Criswell

Actually, we've got a debit / credit card from our bank. It has a Visa logo but takes money straight out of our account... My wife lost hers and someone else used it and we got re-imbursed for it. I am not saying this will happen for everyone, but it happened for us.

If you are that scared about sending your credit card number (which you shouldn't be), you can go to Best Buy and buy a years subscription for $50. No credit cards involved, and it's 100% safe. But, sending a credit card is probably 99.99999999999% safe, so it really is absurd to be scared about it.

Debit cards are reversable. My debit card number was stolen and someone bought like $400 worth of cell phones and service with it. I called the bank and had my money back in a couple of days. Banks, as evil as they are, really will try to work with you to make sure someone doesn't screw you like that. They want to keep all the screwing over of customers to themselves.

d00d, Jessica Simpson is SO not that hot. She is so damn thin!

Yeah she's funny and all, but damn...

Britney beats her by a mile, let alone Xtina. Fergie's the winner and should be in Maxim or whatever magazine out there IMO.
