That's a pretty solid build - the only thing I'd switch is your case - get an Antec 300 or 1100 but otherwise that all looks good.

1100 > 300.

Knowing nothing about cases- what makes the antec 300 better than the the Zalman Z9?

Zalman Z9 uses a lot of cheap plastic and junk fans - the Antec 300 uses a combination of plastic and steel, blue front LED fans and has USB 3.0 among other things.

That is a solid build. Im not a big fan of the Zalman case either but I must say some of that is the looks of it for me. Might consider a Samsung 830 instead of the Crucial M4.

Build looks balanced. Looks good.

I have seen some drop the CPU cooler and SSD and aim for gtx 670 (that may also mean going with an 2500k/z68 mobo) around this price range.

Wow PC building is an expensive pursuit... but i just cant stop myself! The big question is - If i upgrade my GPU to the Sapphire HD 7950 OC as well as the Motherboard to Extreme 4 will I have to upgrade the PSU and will the mobo run the card well?

Well i a GTX670 can play any current games on ultra/max settings a GTX670 uses less power and you could keep use the 550watt you picked so you wouldn't need to upgrade your PSU ;)
