How to Roll Back Catalyst and Make it Stick.

I recently updated from Catalyst 12.2 to 12.3. I found that I can no longer play Portal 2 without crashing at startup. After reading some threads, I found the answer was to roll back to the previous driver.

So... I uninstalled the existing driver, ran Driver Sweeper from safe mode, and re-installed the 12.2 driver. When I went to the CC to check the version, it was 12.3! I did the above procedure twice just in case I goofed up, but it still updates itself to 12.3. Yes, I unchecked the update checkbox.

Finally, I uninstalled the AMD Catalyst/driver/CC etc. and let Windows Update download an AMD driver. Now I'm using ver. 11.5, but Portal plays just fine. Is there any way I can install a Catalyst driver that's a bit newer without it automatically updating itself to version 12.3?

  1. there was a typo in the 12.2 drivers, and it said 12.3 instead...
you could dl 12.1 if you like:

edit it says vista but it's the same 64bit driver for both vista and 7.

    Oh!
So your saying I have been installing 12.3 all the time? Even though I thought it was 12.2?

nononono, just the other way around. 12.2 driver said in the ccc to be 12.3 but that was wrong.
  4. OK, thanks for straightening me out. I will try that.
