Your question

Do I need to upgrade my power supply to run this processor?

Upgrading from AMD A6-3620 to AMD A8-3870K, I know it's the same socket and that the motherboard, M3470G, will support it but this Acer only has a 300w power supply. I'm a novice so any help would be appreciated. I plan on adding a low profile card, something like a 7750, to speed up my SWTOR playing a bit.

For just the processor that psu will be fine. But if you plan on adding a 7750 you are going to want a 400w+ psu for the card.

Will any 400+ power supply work? ATX I'm guessing.

Acer AM3470G-UW10P. I know not the greatest for games but all I play is older titles and mostly just SWTOR. In fact, the APU it has out of the box runs the game around 60fps in most cases so I figure there has to be some room for improvement.

I started by ordering 8gb extra ram to bring my total to 12. Got a good deal on the 3.0ghz processor which just leaves power\video.

Thanks for the help btw.

i would recommend 600watt to be on the safe side, and incase you do want to start overclocking or want to get a better card in the future etc.

Unless he plans on using the psu in a future custom build it wouldn't be worth it as the bios is probably locked to disable OCing. (Not positive but based on past experiences with some dells the bios is most likely locked.) And yes if OP wants to upgrade to a 7850+ he will want a better psu.

Yea youre absolutely right, chances are he will upgrade his whole rig by the time he decides to get a different graphics card. Yea go with 400+ =)

I got the 600w for the same price pretty much, installed it without a hiccup with the processor. On to graphics card now. Thanks for the help!
