Graphics card not running at 100%

so i just finished this build and i tried a few games on it but i noticed it wasnt running smoothly or performing that great, so i got msi afterburner and saw that on most games mu GPU was only hitting about 50-60% load. the only game that seems to use 100% of it is BF3 but when things really heat up it starts to spike again. so i am wondering what the problem is, i dont think i have any kind of bottleneck. i did notice however that the system will not load at 100%, i ran prime95 and msi kombustor but the gpu was hitting about 30% load, but i think my power supply wattage is enough for this build.

specs:
amd phenom ii x6 1045t (2.7 GHZ stock)
nvidia gtx 560 (factory OC)
coolermaster haf 912 case
2x 500 GB HDD
8 GB 1600 ddr3 g-skill ares RAM
asus M4A87TD/USB3 motherboard
corsair cx600 600 watt power supply

anybody know what the problem is? ive tried reinstalling drivers/ using different ones.

You have 40a on the 12 volt rail, which should be enough. Are you using Molex to PCI-e convertors?

i ran skyrim and was only hitting about 55% load, minecraft was even worse, less than 50% most of the time,

well both of those games would be limited by your cpu. Everything seems to be normal.

really? cause i played minecraft on a different system with a 9400 gt and it was maxing out the card, would overclocking my cpu make games perform better?

Did you monitor the CPU and GPU usage concurrently to find a correlation of where your bottleneck is occurring?

its because the 9400gt is much weaker than your card and thus needs to give 99% while your card does not.

i tried, i opened task manager and msi afterburner at the same time, i started playing then every once in a while i would alt tab and check the charts i noticed the gpu spikes when the cpu is under heavy load, and like i said before i ran prime95 and kumbostor at the same time

i guess, do you recommend overclocking my cpu for better performance?

Sure, if your cpu can handle overclocking then go for it.

another thing to point out, i played minecraft on another system with a gtx 560 and it never spiked and actually had better fps

hmmm what cpu is in the other system? also do you have any background tasks that would cause problems?

no, the game should max your card out.
m

also in intense situations it drops to the 30s

might want to downclock your gpu and see if the load increases.
m

l
April 14, 2012 12:57:44 AM

that worked but i literally put the slider all the way to the left so wouldnt that decrease the peformance? and it now loads around the 90s

that does decrease performance. It was just to test if there was something wrong with the gpu itself.

it looks like theres something else in your system thats the bottleneck. If you can, try to OC your cpu and see if it increase gpu load.

My guess is it's the CPU.The Phenom ii's just can't cut it anymore.I had a Phenom ii x4 965 @ stock clocks and it didn't bottleneck by 6870.Try shooting for 3ghz+.

What CPU cooler do you have?

I was wondering,if this is a new build why didn't you go for a Bulldozer based processor?

i currently have the cpu at 3.5 GHZ so that didnt work, maybe ill push it a little further

i have the hyper 212 plus and i am running now at 3.5 GHZ

because i saw some benchmarks and was not impressed by the bulldozers and i found out that the bulldozers arent even true-core designs (1 bulldozer module= 2 cores)

one thing that really confuses me is that the only game that maxes out the card is Battlefield 3, thats weird huh?

3.5ghz shouldn't be a problem. The cpu should be good.

This is a weird problem, you should try reinstalling drivers.

it didnt do anything, and when i played skyrim i noticed the gpu loaded more in some places than others, the same goes with minecraft.

Bulldozer CPU's may perform the same as Phenom ii's but they can reach higher clocks.

If your at 3.5ghz then it shouldn't be bottlenecking it.

You turned all of the power saving features off in the BIOS right?

It's a power saving function. It's the same thing as Kool&Quiet. It reduces the multiplier when the CPU isn't doing anything intensive.

ok i found out that if i turn up the settings on a game it uses more of the gpu, but if i turn it down it uses less of it, but i maxed out skyrim and it still uses around 70% of it and even less in cities.

Game that don't properly address GPU's can sometimes not be getting the best out of the card.Skyrim I found is one of those games.

Why don't you try setting the clock speeds back to default.

Default clock speeds for the GTX560 are...

Core Clock: 810MHz

Shader Clock: 1620MHz
