I just found an i3 2100 from Tiger Direct for $80 in the toms hardware deals article for today. I'm wondering if this coupon will apply to Tiger Direct Canada too and whether I should buy this or buy some IB processor. As of right now I'm planning on buying these things:

Is it worth dropping the processor to an i3 2100 to take advantage of this price? Please hurry as this ends tomorrow at 11:59 pm!

Thanks

Yeah, it's not worth it. Way too much of a down-grade. If anything, you should spend $2 more to get the i5-3550 if you don't want a 3570K.

If you're tight on budget, you could go for an AMD A10 APU (with an FM2 socket motherboard, of course), disable the IGP, and use that huge thermal headroom to overclock it significantly. At least it'd be far less of a downgrade with a significant price drop instead of a huge downgrade. with a significant price drop.

Yeah, I'd rather not risk overclocking such expensive things. I took your advice on the 3550. Thanks :D But is it really that much of a downgrade? I was actually considering going with some Pentium processor to save me some money and then this deal popped up. A lot of people say the i3 2100 is a capable gaming processor :p I want to hear more before I finally go out and buy it all.

The i3 would be barely more than half as good for most modern games that depend on CPU performance. Overclocking is very rarely dangerous unless someone does something stupid, just FYI.

Also there are so many good guides out there to walk you through each step of the process. All it takes is time and little effort. There is also the Intel Performance Tuning plan to cover you if you make a mistake and damage the processor. http://click.intel.com/tuningplan/

He was suggesting, I purchase an AMD A10, disabe the IGP, and then overclock.. Do you think that's a good idea?

It won't match an i5*, but it will be better than an i3*. If you're that worried about overclocking, then get what you want, just be aware of what you're missing. Unfortunately, i3s don't overclock much at all, or I'd gladly recommend them.

*talking about LGA 1155 i5s and i3s, just for clarification.
