i5 3570k
coolermaster hyper 212 evo (CPU cooling for overclocking)
z77 motherboard (ASUS, GIGABYTE etc.) Full ATX size and more features
Geforce GTX 670/680
16gb 1600 DDR3 RAM (8 would work as well) Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, So on.

700 watt PSU (Corsair, Seasonic, Antec brand) 80+ certified. Very important to get a quality PSU

Get an SSD 120gb for a boot drive, most used games. Crucial M4 is cheap and very good
Get a 1TB or more HDD 7200 rpm for your data storage. Western Digital/Seagate

A little tired so just giving the redux version. Good luck

No that is not the build I use currently. I use an amd system and it is under my information tab. That is a layout I am currently thinking of building for my LAN computer sans the GPU and PSU.

Yes the soup is home made Pho. Picked up a few things when I worked in the restaurant biz as a cook for a couple years =)

Here's another possible config:
ASUS P8Z77-V Premium
Nvidia GTX 680
8-16 GB RAM
Corsair Force GT 120 GB SSD
1 TB HDD
Corsair Professional Series Gold AX850

With that I believe you could still stay on $1800 if you choose your stuff right.
