Pc screen goes dark when displaying dark picture

My pc screen goes almost pitch black in games, especially in dark areas. Also happens when watching movies and surfing the internet.
Please help!!

I have a 20" LED samsung screen and MSI HD 6870 graphics card.

Try messing with the brightness and contrast in the monitor's settings menu.
