A bios update is not necessary for upgrading to an i7 2600K from an i5 2500 sandybridge? Am I right? Only if I decide to upgrade to the ivy bridge, I would need a bios update.

My mobo is an Asus Gen 3 LGA 1155

why not just do a bios update if theres one available, no harm done.

This motherboard supports the latest Intel® Core™ i3/Core™ i5/Core™ i7/Pentium/Celeron 2nd generation processors in the LGA1155 package, with memory and PCI Express controllers integrated to support 2-channel (4 DIMM) DDR3 memory and 16 PCI Express 2.0 lanes. This provides great graphics performance. Intel® Core™ i3/Core™ i5/Core™ i7/Pentium/Celeron 2nd generation processors are among the most powerful and energy efficient CPUs in the world.

No, ther is no need to update the BIOS to upgrade a SB chip, but an updated BIOS will do no harm.
