My old router blew out, so I went out and bought a cheap D-Link EBR-2310 router to replace it, but now the connection on all three of the computers on the network often gets... patchy.
Say if I'm playing a game I don't experience any problems, but if I'm browsing websites it often seems like there's severe packet loss. Some tabs would open up, very slowly, sometimes without images while others would just time out. I'd do a tracert to google.com during these times and there are hops that get a timeout. It gets past my router without problems, but as soon as it goes out onto the net there are hops that timeout.
And the strangest thing is that while this is happening I can play video games, such as World of Warcraft, without experiencing packetloss or disconnects. Although if I try to log in to World of Warcraft during this time, it times out as well.
And this happens very often, too. Like once every few hours and it lasts for 5-15mins at a time.
I know very little about networking, so I'd appreciate if I could get some help with this. Is this faulty firmware? Crappy hardware? Is there some other problem I need to address? Maybe it's just the actual cabling of my internet? I did start to experience some very brief periods of packet loss in the evenings right before I changed my router, but nothing as bad as this (I use Rogers cable in Toronto, Canada).
