Overclocking is great with AMD chips, but even at high clock speeds they can't compete with similarly classed Intel chips performance wise. If you can work an i5 2500k into your budget, you will be able to overclock to your hearts content, AND get much better peformance out of it than any AMD chip out there right now.

It isn't that AMD chips are bad, Intel has just taken the lead in performance for now. If you're working with a strict budget, AMD chips are great thanks to their low price points in both chip and motherboard categories, but if you're looking for the best you can get with your money, Intel is the way to go.
