Just prior to Christmas 04, I purchased a Nikon D70 and an Epson Printer.
Along with this purchase came a rebate of $50. Well I sent in the rebate
with the required receipts and waited. Finally I got a note back saying
they could not send the rebate to a P.O. Box. Well I live in a place where
the US Post Office does not deliver, period. The only way that I can get
mail is via a US Post Office Box. So I sent an explanation back, within
three days of getting their letter and it was returned to me saying that
their (Nikon and Epson¡¦s) post office box was closed.
Well I sent letters of Complaint to Nikon, Epson and Mikes¡¦ Camera (where I
made the original purchase).
Nikon ¡V Nikon sent me a form letter saying that it was Epson¡¦s problem.
Not even an apology! Over the years, since 1967, I have bought many
thousands of dollars worth of Nikon Products, do you think that I will be
in a hurry to buy more from Nikon?
Epson ¡V Epson never responded to my letter. As a Director or IT, I have
bought many printers from Epson and as a Consultant I have often
recommended them. Do you think I will recommend them again? Do you think
that I will replace my current three Epson Printers when they wear out with
new Epson Printers? You can bet not!
Mike¡¦s Camera in Denver ¡V The problem was not Mike¡¦s Camera, but they
called and apologized and said that they were sending me a $50 gift
certificate. The gift certificate never arrived! I have mostly bought
locally. Maybe I would be better off buying mail order in the future!

It has nothing to do with Nikon or Epson. It's just a fraud prevention
rule imposed by the rebate processing companies. Get over it. Don't buy
products with mail-in rebates next time if you don't want to deal with
the hassles.

A wise piece of wisdom:
Never buy because of a rebate.
If there's a rebate on something that you would otherwise buy anyway,
good. If you don't get the rebate, you don't lose anything.

I agree, I have had nothing but good luck so far with rebates from both

I don't. I went planning to make the same purchase before I heard of the
rebate. I was simply annoyed and still am, that they prosmissed something
and didn't follow through. They in essence said that I was important them,
particularly in the way that they nandled my complaint.
When it comes to further purchases, I shall remember how important I am to
them. For digital photography Cannon seems to have a better reputation
than Nikon does anyway. As for Epson there are a lot of quality
manufacturers out there, it was their support more than their product that
I liked anyway

I had a problem with Nikon over a rebate. I filed a complaint with the
BBB for their headqurters and got a check in a few weeks. BTW, they
have a Unsatisfactory BBB rating.

There's always someone that has a bad experience, when I worked
customer service at a photo manufacturer I dealt with all kind of issues
and worked very hard to resolve them.
As a consumer what I don't like about Epson USA, no 800 number for
tech support, & I don't like the fact they have no tech support email.

Over the last couple of months, I bought a couple of lenses and one flash
from Nikon and an Epson printer. To my surprise, they all came with a rebate
request form. I sent it in and received a check for all of the items within
a couple of weeks.
I assume your problem is just not well handled by their computer system. All
this is done with minimal human intervention. You may just forget the rebate
for now. Next time, just submit it via a friend's address (not a PO box).
That should get you back into their system.
BTW, courteous customer support appears to be a commodity that Nikon has
given up long ago. If I send them a message with my corporate address, I
have a sales rep on the phone within the hour. When I use my private
address, the regional sales rep does not even reply. Maybe I should sign up
for NPS membership...........just kidding!

I don't know if any of you deal with CostCo, but they have a computerized
rebate system that is very easy to use and gnerally results in the rebate
in a few weeks. It probably does not require much human intervention on
the vendors part.
But I assume that the vendors count on some rebates never being sent in and
a few people giving up on the process.

All purchase information is inside Costco's database so they don't even
require any barcodes from the products. You type in membership #, store
#, register # and it can verify instantly. Not so with NORMAL rebates
which need to cross check many proofs. I agree that mail-in rebates are
costly and time consuming. Best not to participate in their games but if
you do, and fails to receive the check, just keep bugging them. It's not
manufacturers' fault but the rebate processing companies they use.

I did as well and in that case it was the trigger for buying the camera at
that time, although I would have sooner or later. The printer rebate was
something I hadn't known about in advance.

She means, you should have read the fine print. I haven't seen any
rebates, from Nikon, Epson or otherwise that have ever stated that they
will deliver a rebate to a PO Box. Rebate fulfillment centers generally
don't fulfill reabtes to PO boxes in order to cut down on fraud and to
help ensure that each person gets only one rebate (no, it desn't totally
eliminate fraud, but such practices DO cut down significantly on the
problem).
If you don't have a physical address to deliver to, then you either need
to find a friend or relative willing to let you use their address, or
you need to petition the postmaster in your area to assign you a
deliverable address.

How, if you don't read the fine print on contracts you enter into?

Nor do I like the fact that they heavily mark up the cost of their
cartridges, and have in the past required people to change them out even
when plenty of ink is left. I like my Nikon, but I'll stick to Canon
injket printers.

One thing you may have tried was explaining in writing that you required
the payment sent to the POB address, while at the same time provide your
physical address so they could do what verifications they needed to do.
Maybe they would and maybe they would not except that but it might have
worked.

So in essence, you're balming Nikon/Canon for the USPS' ineptness, and
your acceptance of this ineptness? Way to go.

Call it what you will, it has terms that you must abide by in order to
get what you want. You didn't follow them. So guess what? No check.

Just my 2 cents worth....
I've gotten every single rebate check I've sent in for many years since
I did several things. Follow the directions to the letter. Review after
I filled out all the spaces and made sure all "attachments", like bar
codes, were enclosed. Kept a record of the transaction and marked my
calendar as to the date the rebate is due. Call when the rebate is due
if it's not received. Escalate as soon as I think the person I'm
dealing with is unable to say "Yes" (most of the people who answer the
phone on a complaint line are only empowered to say "No" ). Escalate
until I get my check. Anyone who accepts that rebates are not the
responsibility of the manufacturer because the process of filling the
rebate request is farmed out is really out of touch. If the company
sells me the goods with the rebate, then they are responsible to see
that I get that rebate. No business should get off the hook because
they subbed something out to incompetant contractors. It's their
responsibility to see that the agreement they make with a consumer is
met!
As for Nikon, I was a dedicated Nikon guy for many years in the 70's
and 80's. I never had any problems or direct dealings - their equipment
performed flawlessly. When I lost interest in photography, I gave my
books and equipment to my oldest son. He used Nikons for many years,
first as an amateur, now as a professsional photojournalist. He won't
buy Nikon again. Between their total disregard for customer service and
having stood on their laurels way too long, they've lost him as a
customer. He tells me that Canon has totally eclipsed Nikon in the
professional digital camera and lens market. I guess even the best
fall, and fall faster when they begin to believe that it's the best
because it has their logo on it, not because they made it the best
through good research, engineering and customer service. I'm sorry
about Nikon, but they've dug their own grave as though they couldn't
wait to get in it!
