what is the difference between the 3550 and the 2500 ?

• Both have 4 cores / 4 threads.
• Both have 6MB Intel® Smart Cache.
• Both are running @ 3.3GHz.
• Both Socket LGA 1155.

•X• the only difference is the watt consumption and manufacture tech the i5 3550 (22 nm) and the 2500 (32nm).

they are on different architectures.
The 2500 is using Sandy Bridge (2nd Generation), whilst the 3550 is on the Ivy Bridge architecture, the successor to Sandy Bridge (3rd Generation).

As wr6133 said, clock for clock Ivybridge is slightly faster for is it a slightly revised version of Sandy Bridge.

Ivy also uses considerably less power, especially at load, but runs somewhat hotter anyway due to the poor quality thermal paste between the CPU die and the IHS. Less heat is generated, but at greater thermal density and it has trouble getting from the CPU die to the IHS because of the paste. The flux-less solder that Intel used on Sandy Bridge is much more thermally conductive.
