My 2 year old system is starting to struggle with my games, and i think its about time i give it a bit more life. Unfortunately I'm pretty poor (19 years of age) so nothing expensive or new is possible for me.

I'm thinking of replacing my current Athlon 620 with a 2nd hand phenom 965 BE and i will overclock it like i have done to my athlon. Would this be a good investment? I can get it pretty cheap for the place i live in (SA) about 900 ZAR (Rands) which is 3-4 weeks of working for me lol.

From google that's over 100 USD which is expensive for a used CPU.

In America, a new one costs the same. Try to get a Phenom II x3 or a cheaper Phenom II x4.

Wouldn't a x3 be a downgrade from a athlon quad?. These prices are pretty good around here for ex. i5 3570k costs like 2500-2600 ZAR (which is about $300) which is crazy expensive, so a R900 CPU is cheap.

I thought it was an Athlon single/dual core, LOL. If you have the proper motherboard, try unlocking your CPU. That unlocks the L3 cache, making it into a Phenom. Tell us your mobo, and I can tell if if it's possible to unlock it.

I'd offer 700 for the used part then, I don't usually pay more than half for used stuff.
