Does anyone agree it should be possible to award yourself Best Answer if you solve the problem yourself, in order that others with a similar problem might benefit from your experience? No points awarded of course, else we'd all be Masters in jig time...

More about : award answer

The idea would have greater value if threads with BAs came to the top of the list of searches when someone is seeking an answer to a problem but I'm not sure that could be done. People tell me that when they go to Google with a few well chosen words, the first pages are filled with useless threads in Tom's, TSG, Bleeping and the like or worse still, some forums you have to join to find out their top searches are equally useless.

A forum's reputation would be greatly enhanced if it became known for quality answers to searched problems but the cynic in me wonders if the advertisers wouldn't be attracted to a forum with only viewers passing through once.

True, and I must admit I don't always agree with the OP's choice of 'Best Answer'..,Also at present the posts are weighted in favour of Discussion as that is the default tab when initiating a thread, thus solutions often not rewarded with a BA. From my own experience when googling a problem I usually try Tom's 1st from the search results and go for the BA if such exists, but how to attract a newcomer? Perhaps if 'Solved' always came up in the search result, I know it does sometimes with Tom's, but usually answers listed chronologically. Hadn't considered the Advertisers, though a good reputation for useful answers would surely attract more attention, albeit once only....
