Driver issues?

A while back I started having issues with my computer randomly shutting down on me. Before it shutdown, the screen would flash, and a message along the lines of "your graphics driver has crashed, but windows recovered it" would display. I have done a clean install of the drivers, updated to the latest ones, gone back to the ones that I thought were "stable" and done just about everything else that I could think of related to the drivers. Oddly enough, the card runs rock solid stable when in safe mode, or when I put a very old PCI graphics card in it.

i7-960
Asus sabertooth X58 motherboard
Corsair Vengence DDR3-1666 Ram (2x 4GB sticks)
Toshiba 500 GB HDD
Kingwin 1000W PSU

Bad drivers will not cause your system to shutdown. Usually it is caused by insufficient power or bad RAM, but seems like your system is okay. Might be RAM, dunno.

do a memtest first one stick at the time

Also, check the temps on your CPU.
I haven't heard of KingWin PSUs, though.

I ran memtest on each stick of ram individually. Each stick passed memtest multiple times. Any other thoughts?

CPU temps? Idle and at full load?

CPU generally idles low to mid 30s, depending on ambient room temperature. The highest I have ever seen it is 60 when converting video.

could you test that new video card in another computer

Test it out on a friend's PC or so, like scout_03 said.

I have not been able to put the card in a different computer, but I have put a friend's similar card (EVGA GTX 465) in my machine, and the same symptoms persist.

if your friend card does not work in your system could you try your card in is ,that wil tel you if your card is good and the issue is something else could be board or memory sticks

I will try to put my card in a different system, and see what happens.
I put each stick of RAM through memtest for several hours and found no errors.

Turns our my friend whose machine I was going to use didn't have the right power connectors for the card. I think I am going to try returning the motherboard for a "repair" and hope for the best.
