What would be the best possible cpu for gaming? Price is not an issue, i just want the cpu with the best gaming performance. I don't do any photoshoping or video rendering, just mainly gaming and video watching.
The games i play include crysis, battlefield, mw3, skyrim, l4d2, saints row, assassins creed and others.

Here's my planned build so far, my budget is around 4000$:
-Geforce GTX 690x 4GB video card: 1049$
-Corsair vengeance 4x4 GB RAM DDR3 PC319200: 334$
-ASUS Xonar STX PCIe sound card: 196$
-Windows 7 home premium: 125.95$
-Crucial m4 512 GB SSD x2: 760$

As you can see, I haven't chosen a motherboard, case, or PSU yet, so any suggestions would be helpful (again i don't care about the price, just performance). I've also never built a pc before so any tips would be appreciated.

Yeah, the i5 2500k/3570k is the best gaming cpu out there. If you are going with a 690 and have a huge budget you should get a custom watercooling loop. This will take care of cooling the 690 (which blows hot air out both ends) and cool the cpu enough to comfortably run 5 Ghz.

For a PSU, I recommend a Corsair AX850 (or a AX1200 so you can get 2 690s).

The case is your choice so think about aesthetics and your build but for watercooling:
Corsair 650D, 800D and 600T
NZXT 810 or Phantom
Cooler Master HAF-X
Silverstone TJ07 or TJ11 (If you really want to spend some cash)
These are just a few of the many options out there.

This is a highend system so go with an i7 3770k especially with that budget, an i5 3570k doesnt feel right with your build.
