I have an interesting issue. I recently purchased a few Dell "workstations." They have integrated video with HDMI and VGA outputs. To my surprise they run dual monitors just fine, no gaming at all. I have 3 different sets of monitors, Samsung, ASUS and Acer. Using an HDMI to DVI cable on one and VGA to VGA on the other has worked on both the ASUS and Samsung sets. The Acer set is giving an issue.

The one on DVI is fine, but the one using VGA is "pinched." Almost as if it is formatting the signal to a 4:3 aspect ratio. It is fine top to bottom, but the sides have black bars. Not quite as bad as a 4:3 picture on a 16:9 screen, but close. I have tried the other brand monitors on the same system and they work fine. I even tried swapping the Acers, they both work fine on the DVI. Somehow the Acer VGA inputs are not working correctly. Using the "auto configure" actually pulls the image down past the bottom of the screen a bit.

Any ideas?

Wasn't sure where to post this...

Have you tried to manually configure the monitor via the menu?

How about changing the resolution/aspect ratio (if possible) via Windows itself?

Yes, to both questions. Those were the first things I tried.

However, we did find the solution. It was the refresh rate. It doesn't seem to make sense, but it worked. Somehow, Windows 7 (even with Acer's new drivers) had it set at 24hz. Changing it to 60hz fixed everything.

Well, I feel like an idiot. It was actually the refresh rate. Set it to 60hz and it is fine. Weird thing is that I have no idea why it was set at 59hz automatically. I didn't think that the refresh rate would mess with the actual image size, but it did.
