Hi,

I'm trying to network my stationary and my laptop computers with a Netgear router. Almost everything works well, I get internet connection on both computers via the router, and my stationary computer can access my laptop without trouble. However, my laptop cannot access my stationary computer at all.

Disabling the firewalls doesn't help. I have tried putting another laptop at the stationary's place, which works fine, my laptop can then access the new laptop without problem. So the problem must be in the stationary computer, somehow, I guess. I should add that sending ping commands to the stationary works fine, but the computer doesn't show up in the laptop's "My Network Places". When I click "view workgroup computers" my stationary is shown, but I get an error message when trying to access it. Any idea what's wrong? Thanks a lot in advance.

What Operating Systems are you working with here?

File and Printer Sharing Enabled?

Mutual Accounts on each computer? Username/password so you have authority to access each?

Im having the same problem with 2 win98se pcs. The router works fine--- I can dsl surf the net on both PCs but cant network files between them. I used the software www.networkmagic.com to get them to network during a trial period so i know the hardware and connections are fine. Id like a book or web site that can tell me in a nutshell how i can get these 2 pcs to network without becoming a network PHD reading entire 1000 page tech manuals. Id like to know basic steps and why im doing them, kinda like tomshardware site helps on other issues with relevant info. Id like to also avoid paying 40 bucks to network magic to do somehting that seems like it should be simple and commonplace, but i got work to get done soon between the 2 pcs so i might have to fork out the 40 bucks. Its like paying money for software to get up and eat breakfast or walk to the store. grrrrr. Thanks for any help on this matter.

Make sure the workgroup is the same on both pcs
Make sure you are sharing at least one folder on each computer.
Cant remember if 98 has a network wizard or not but if it does run it on one computer, make the network disk and then run that disk on the other computer.

Look in the control panel.
Did you try sharing a drive or folder on both pcs?
Any fire walls running?

Turning off the firewall worked. How do i get the network to work within the firewall? Would it be by subnet or ip address? where would i find them if i use those numbers too keep the network up with the firewall on?

Anyway, it works. Thanks

What firewall are you using? There should be an option in the firewall configuration settings that will allow network activity from certain IPs or from a whole network address range. Look thru the help menus that came with the firewall or try google.

Im using zone alarm. where can i figure out the ip range for other pcs (or all the pcs) on my network?

start -> run ->type 'cmd' , no quotes, hit enter
black box opens. type ipconfig /all
in the test that comes up will be a line that says

IP Address ........ 192.168.?.?
That is your ip address. Do that on all the computers in your network to make sure they are all on the same network.
The first 3 numbers should all be the same and the last one is different on each pc.
You network range will be the first 3 numbers and the fourth will be 0 to 255

I've had almost the same problem as mattdude, except that I had three computers and that the computer with the problem could not be accessed or access any of the other two through "My Network Places" (or in any other way that I tried, except for pinging).

I've tried almost everything that I could find, but nothing helped.
(
By the way, one thing that I've tried that has worked under other circumstances is to do the following:
Go to "Start -> Run" and then type in \\_____ where "_____" is the network name of the computer that you want access to. This seems to be easier for the computer than to go through windows explorer and my network places.
)

What I did today to solve the problem was to buy a new network card (NIC) and then it worked at once after running the installation CD.

The new card is a "D-Link DFE-530TX". (It says on the box "Create you own network with 2 PC:s, but it works fine with my router).

The old card that didn't work was an "Accton" card (don't have any more info on this card except that it was 6-7 years old).

System specs:
- Windows XP Home SP1 (the computer with the problem)
- Windows XP Home SP2
- Windows XP Pro SP2
- D-Link router
