Using pavtube ultimate blue convertor to convert blue rays to various video formats. Which processor would work the best for this application? A $120 AMD FX-4170 Zambezi 4.2GHz or the $210 INTEL I5?

Why don't you do yourself a favour, and get your self a $190 AMD FX-8150? For video encoding and conversion, it will easily tie with the i5.
Video conversion one of the strongest points of the FX chips, because such software can use all of the chips 8 cores :) You might as well wait for the newer FX-8350 chips that are coming out by the end of October, they offer around 15% better performance in video encoding verses the current FX 8150.

The i5 has quick sync, but the quality is bad when compared to pure x86 encodings :)
