The new burner has Burn-Proof, IDE/ATAPI interface, 4 megs of Buffer, and a "new tech" called PoweRec II, which slows the burning process if you use bad quality CD-media so that the burned CD has no errors of any kind.

Anyway I don't like PoweRec. If I am trying to burn a Sh¡t brand CD at 24X, I want to burn it at 24X, yeah, I know it is a crappy CD, but anyway I want to burn it at 24X!!!, so I wouldn't like to burn the CD at only 4X just because the burner decides it's better for conserving my data... - Just my tought...

It won't go from 24x to 4x. I vaguely remember reading about this, and the reviewer said it worked quite well, actually. it'd do a quick test and run at the highest safe speed.

Even with this enabled, the reviewer was running some 16x media at 18-20x, no errors, no slowing down.

But, for example, my Plextor 12/10/32A (without PoweRec) is able to burn 6x brand-o-shite CDs at 12X without any kind of problem, they can be read in all drives, hi-fi systems...

So why can't a 24X burner burn at 24X with all media? At least there should be a way to disable PoweRec using software.

I have read more carefully all the stuff at the Plextor site.

The 24/10/40A burner burns in the most ideal case at 16X from minute 0 to min 6, at 20X from min 6 to min 16 and at 24X from min 16 to min 74 (or 80 or whatever). That speed variation is called "ZoneCLV".

So is it a 24/10/40 burner or a 16-20-24/10/40 burner?

Dammit!!!

Some calculations...

6*60/16 + 10*60/20 + 58*60/24 = 197.5 seconds each CD...

74*60/197.5 = 22.48101... Oh yes... my fault, very close to 24X

But if you read how PowerRec II (yes, only 1 "R") works (<A HREF="http://www.plextor.be/english/technical/powerec.html" target="_new">http://www.plextor.be/english/technical/powerec.html</A>), if you happen to use a medium quality CD...

6*60/16 + 10*60/16 + 58*60/20 = 234 seconds each medium quality CD

74*60/234 = 18.9... close to 20X, NOT 24X

And with a real crappy CD... 16X NOT CLOSE TO 24X at all

(All calculations without lead-in/out time taken into account)

Does anyone know for sure if it is possible to disable PoweRec II?

YES, IT IS POSSIBLE TO DISABLE IT!

And even if you left it on, from reviews I've seen, it'll still burn CDs above what they are rated for.

That 'ZoneCLV' sounds like a load of BS. Constant Angular Velocity does that, and it sounds like it's spinning the cd at a constant rpm and changing the power of the laser to compensate for the increased speed on the outter tracks.

Sounds like a good drive though......

Yeah, they're great.

Sorry, haven't been able to find any of the reviews I saw before. Maybe I'm just full of crap :)
