First computer build help

So I'm thinking about building my first computer and I had a friend who built his help me a little. I'd use it mostly for gaming, watching/ recording videos/ t.v., and programming (i'm a Software Engineer major but don't know much about hardware). I put together parts on NewEgg and I would really appreciate some feedback about the parts I chose.

I would need this computer to last me a while, so spending a little more on better parts isn't a huge issue. However, I do want to keep this below $1000 if possible. Thanks for the help.

If you want to be a stickler to cut the price just a tiny bit, you can break the cpu/mobo combo and do:

CPU + CD Drive combo
MOBO + Ram combo

Doing so though will force you to change your ram, because g.skill ram rarely combo deals with anything


edit: also green series hdd are slower than traditional 7200rpm hdds.

I think this is the cheapest 1tb to $ ratio at the current moment

this should let you play games at ultra and perform pretty dam well in other tasks. personally, if you plan to use this for programming and work, i would blow a little more money on getting a i7.

if you do not plan to overclock (to boost the multipler of the CPU and the GPU=make it go faster), you can drop the aftermarket cooler and get a i5 3550 or a i7 3770

I would also recommend picking a better PSU, as picking one should be one of the most important steps because possibly, if it goes down, it takes everything else with it(its like the human heart)


Since you are using a rosewill case, getting the hive psu combo wouldnt be so far exactly budget wise, as it crosses 25$ of the combo

Get a $40 case like this one (a very good case, BTW), and spend $60 on the PSU, not the other way around.

BigTroll's build is OK, except he forgot the PSU and added an OS and no monitor.

yeah sorry forgot to put the psu back inside. a cheap and very good one is the seasonic m12II 520w. currently on sale at newegg for 59.99 and it is also semi modular

Thanks for the help! What kind of audio does the motherboard provide? sound cards can be pretty cheap, so would it be worth buying one?

You don't need a sound card unless you have some awesome surround sounds system. The onboard sound is good.

there are cheap ones that can be benefitial even for movies like this one. as cranked said, you wont need it unless you have some higher end stuff. motherboards these days have decent sound

ok, so I looked at the recommended build and I tried to bring down the price a little. I wanted the operating system with it, so I changed the CPU to an Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor and the video card Asus Radeon HD 7770 2GB Video Card

your changes dont really work well. a i5 2500k will be non-overclockable since b75 doesnt allow for it. also, the 7770 card will only get you frame rates suitable for medium/high graphical settings
