the Phenom II had proved faster in core to core performance tests, the only real FX series processor worth getting for gaming at this point would be the 4170 as it has proved to hold its own in gaming tests and is quite the gaming budget processor.

I'll be using a 970 chipset....I was reading some reviews on the 6200 and people were reporting 40 fps minimum increase from a phenom ii 945. I figure that would amount to something like a 15-20 fps increase over a 965, which is why I am seriously considering the 6200.

Those reviewers either spent the review budget on crack which they then smoked before writing the review or they reviewed the Phenom using a 3DFX Voodoo 2 and the 6200 using a GTX680.

Most games are GPU bound so either would do less good as an upgrade to your 945 than a GPU upgrade would (unless your running a top card)

I was just about to ask the same question, I think I'm going to go for the AMD FX-6200, Its tubo speed is 4.1MHz which is .7MHz higher than the 965. This will improve the fps quite a bit and it also has 2 more cores (not effective in gaming but still useful) also it's AM3+ so it'll be compatible with newer motherboards (am4 maybe)

Okay, first off, clock speeds really don't mean much. That's why the FX 4170 gets destroyed by the i5-3570k. Anyways, I doubt your gonna use the 6cores, and they aren't all physical cores either, and the phenom II are. Go with the Phenom, they are one of the best amd processors.
