Does Crossfire not play well with 120hz displays or something?

It never fails... whenever I try to play a game with my monitor at 120Hz, leaving Crossfire enabled makes the game tear... I either have to play without Crossfire enabled (thus sacrificing performance), or play at less than 120 FPS (which kind of ruins the point of having the extra Crossfire power for all but the most demanding games).

Is this a known issue, and are there any fixes? The cards I have are two 6870s, if that helps.

EDIT: Whoops, didn't mean stutter, meant tear. Well aware of micro-stuttering, but that's not the issue I have. The whole screen will start tearing.

Vsync has no noticeable effect. Crossfire increases my frames by about 50-75%, so about in line with what it should be.

I can't say I've extensively tested it, but I know I have to change my monitor refresh rate to 110 Hz for most games I can think of off the top of my head. Battlefield 3 I can launch in 120Hz, but if I tab out then re-enter the tearing starts.
