Hi guys, my computer is older (05/2007), cpu is amd Athlon 64 x2 3600+(windsor, am2, 65w), mother board is oem. i want to upgrade it to 5600+(Brisbane, 65w) or others, i'm not sure that two type of cores are compatible.

if not, whether the top cpu i can get is 5200+(windsor, 65w)?

thanks a lot

We need the exact name and model number of the computer. Either way the Athlon 64 is pretty old and to me isn't even worth upgrading.

Unfortunately Gigabyte didn't make any retail AM2 mobos with VIA chisets.

Found an Asus one that supports all Athlon X2s up to 89w:

http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2/M2VTVM/

BUT the big question will be BIOS support, you'll probably need an updated one to recognise a 5600+ or even 5200+. If you can find your precise PC model number on the Lenovo website you may be able to determine CPU support.

there is no cpu checklists, and processor support have not athlon 64 x2 family.
k8m890ce can support that (3600+ at least), but no references.

maybe k8m890ce is better than k8m890, but via does not mention it.

i have searched lenovo support website, no bios provided for download, also can't find cpu support lists.

according to release date, 5200+ is just same as my computer(bios date 04/2007), 5600+ is few months later.

i got something about k8m890ce, not from via and lenovo. it's involved south bridge. 'CE' is version code.
if SB VT8237A used on motherboard (my case), chipset (north bridge) will be called k8m890ce, but VT8251(higher version) will not. for other SB, i have no more hints.

so i will try it from lower to higher, bios maybe a problem, i got some from internet.

thanks again for you guys help very much.
