Which is better processor?

Last response: in CPUs

I am having a hard deciding which processor to get. I'm building my first rig, but its running a bit over budget(I was trying to keep it around a thousand). Is the MD FX-4170 better than the AMD Phenon ii x4 955 black edition? I'm going to be using the rig mostly for gaming. I'm also going to be running 2 Gigabyte 7850's 2GB card's in crossfire.

Is the FX-4170 really that bad? I figured since its running at 4.2Ghz to 4.3Ghz turbo out of the box it would run laps around the 955BE.

go for the new FX-4300 or FX-6300 they perform better than both

Have you thought about going with the new 8350 from AMD? It's comparable to an i-5 right now.

This. If you can't afford the new Piledriver in the budget then go with a 965 BE. It's a bit better for gaming than the FX-4170 where as the FX takes the lead in multithreaded programs. Make sure to get an aftermarket cooler though, Hyper 212+/Evo if you're overclocking.

The best CPU for gaming would be an i5-2500K / 3570K. But if you're sticking to AMD then the 965 BE won't dissappoint.

8350 is useless for gaming.
fx-6300 is the one to get. its great value and offers good performance on par with i3-3220 in gaming.
and ofcourse does multi threaded tasks with more oomph than any budget intel cpu.
its also more future proof than i3 and fx-4300 when games take advantage of 6 threads from 2015 onwards.
yeah crysis 4, elder scrolls 6, BF4 etc am looking at you

You say it's useless but at stock speeds it's right behind and sometimes even with the i5-3570K

It's not an Intel killer, that's easy to see, but it's A LOT better than Bulldozer's FX and is right there. It is the upgrade choice from the Phenom II's on the same AM3+.

Go with the 955BE and put a CM 212 on it then OC it to 3.8-etc
The phenom series have proven to outperform the Bulldozer models by quite a bit.
Either do that or wait for the new Piledrivers

Ok. Based on the reviews I've been reading about Bulldozer people says it crap, but the reviews from people who purchased the fx-4170 it love the processor. Why wouldn't it be better to get the processor that's already pushing 4.2GHz right out of the box instead of going with the 3.2GHz 955BE? I purchased the Noctua NH-U12P SE2 CPU Cooler to go with whatever processor I decide to use. The case I'm going to be using is the Cooler Master HAF 912. I already plan on rearranging the fans to optimize air flow. 200mm fan in the front and a 120mm fan on the side of the case for intake with 2 120mm fans on the top and a rear 120mm fan for exhaust. With that kind of air flow, will I be able to keep the 955 cool enough to OC it to 4.0GHZ or higher?

with the new FX-4300 out an the same price as the FX-4170 and performs a lot better i think it's a no brainer to get a FX-4300

+1

The 10% performance increase between Bulldozer and the Phenom II didn't justify the cost of upgrading. The new Piledrivers cost the same as the old Bulldozers and offer a 10% improvement over them (20% over Phenom II's) in performance so upgrading to them is worth it now.

20% improvement in performance is enticing. I know most games only utilize 4 cores though. Based on that should I get the FX-4300 or spend the extra 10 bucks for the extra 2 cores & increased cache of the FX-6300.

For $10 more yes, definitely go for the FX-6300.

FX-4300 3.8ghz Quad Core $130
FX-6300 3.5ghz Six Core $140
FX-8320 3.5ghz Eight Core $180
FX-8350 4.0ghz Eight Core $220

The pricing just seems off between the 4300 & 6300. 4300 has the higher stock speed but 2 less cores for $10 less. I would go for the 6300 or go all the way for the 8350.

I'm going to go with the FX-6300 so my 1st build will stay within the budget I set aside.

This is everything that I'm going to be putting into my 1st home built desktop. I think I did alright for my first build.

AMD FX-6300 Vishera
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ board
Noctua NH-U12P SE2 CPU Cooler
Thermaltake Toughpower XT TPX-675M
Kingston HyperX XMP Blu Red Series 16GB DDR3 1600 (2x8GB)
ASUS Black Blu-ray Drive SATA Model BC-12B1ST/BLK/B/AS
Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB
Cooler Master HAF 912
Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7850 2 GB
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64 bit

Now I just need to wait for the FX-6300 to come in.

Looks good to me. Since that CPU literally just came out it should last you quite awhile. Also remember to not use the drivers that come with the Video Card, download and install Catalyst 12.11, it gives a nice boost to the 7xxx cards (not to mention a free game).
