Anyone use one of these yet? I'm planning a trip this fall, I have 2 one gig
cards which equals about 70 RAW shots on each which is probably plenty for
a day's shooting but not for a week. This looks like a good unit to dump
each days shooting to and from the reviews I've read, should be able to
download a couple of gig cards without a problem using it's battery if
needed during the day. It's about 1/2 the price of the epson which sounds
nice to me and I'd hope being made by nikon it would mean it's fairly
reliable.

I like the fact this nikon can at least show me the "lite" jpegs I capture
at the same time so I can verify that viewable files were uploaded before
erasing the card. Unfortunatly none of these units seem to support ORF so
the fact this one only works with nikon RAW files isn't a deal killer for
me.

Just take your laptop. Much easier to view images on.

I would if I owned one. :-) Can't see buying one just for this use.

ORF = ???

Do you also want it to play MP3's?

Well, I do own a laptop and it's the last thing I would want to schlep
around in my camera bag or even my suitcase. Too big, lousy battery
life, too fragile, etc. Now if I had to stay in touch with my office
even during my "vacation," then yes, I would have my laptop, or
perhaps my company's laptop.

But I'd rather get some iPod-type unit.

And as long as we're dreaming here, this unit should also be a GPS and
a GSM worldphone and play DVDs, and even burn them.

Olympus Raw File

No, just wanting something to dump images to and be able to look at the
small jpegs I record at the same time as RAW. I'm assuming the even though
the unit can't display olympus raw files, it can still record them to the
drive? Since none of the units I've seen support the ORF, that isn't
something I can worry myself with.

I bought a D70 plus a couple of 1Gig cards and I added a Coolwalker to
the kit; went to Peru and Bolivia, took about 5000 pics (RAW + JPegs)
and downloaded everything in the Coolwalker. No problem at all.

As other commented, a laptop is much better for editing, but I kept all
my images and done the editing after the trip.

I never needed the mp3 compatibility (I think that the P2000 from Epson
is doing a great job at both) so I went for the cheapest HD with a
screen. Time will tell if this piece of equipment is made to go a long
way.

In the meantime, the Coolwalker is doing the job for me.
