Would the IBM Deskstar 75GXP or 60GXP need any cooling? I read the ambient temperatures off their charts and it seems as if the inside of a case would get hotter than the high 50's F.
Let me say this: more cooling is never a BAD thing.
Those drives will work find without it. I have two Maxtor's (about 2 degrees cooler than the 75GXPs) in a RAID 0, and a WD above those, and I haven't had any problems.

50C i might be a lttle concerned about... 50F? no way!
so long as your case is well ventilated and your drives arnt all snadwitched together you should be fine.
my 60GXP was sandwitched next to my 16.8GP (which runs warmish) in a fanless case, and had no problems, with either.
of course for overclocking i put 2 casefans in so now they are even happier
