Help please - monitor shuts off, keyboard and mouse stop working

Video card issues? Software issues? Memory issues? power supply issues? MB issues?

Can you throw out a few more details?
1. Make/model or descriotion of PC and Monitor.
2. What tests you did on monitor. Did it intermittently go black, or does it stay black, will it show the BIOS splash screen? Did you use the same cable each time? VGA or DVI or HDMI?
3. Software level Win7 ? linux ?

etc.

Our monitor is about 8 years old and its a 15 inch dell. Do you think that it is just old? We leave our monitor on all the time and I was in microsoft word typing a letter and the screen went black. Windows 7

1. Good news, a new LCD monitor is essentially free given the power savings over an older CRT display. For example, here is a 20" witrh good reviews for $99. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009256&cm_sp=Cat_Monitors-_-Hot_Deals-_-24-009-256 (edit: to clarify, don't run out and get a new monitor unless you want one. but if you do end up needing a monitor that's not all bad)

2. Some confusion on your post "we have gone thru three monitors in two months". Did three different monitors fail on you... or did your 8 year old monitor fail 3 times? (It's not normal for 3 different monitors to fail, we should probably find the cause before making a few more fail.)

3. When the monitor when blank in "microsoft word typing a letter and the screen went black." did the screen come back to life after reboot?

Please say something about your computer (brand, model number) most "screen went blank" problems are the computer, not the monitor.
