I currently have a 1680x1050 22" monitor with a vga and hdmi port. Problem is that I ordered a new rig today and the video card only has 2 DVI ports and 1 HDMI port (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7168004&CatId=3669). When I connect my current pc (laptop) via hdmi to the monitor, the picture is all distorted and it won't let me choose the native 1680x1050 resolution. I searched on google and saw that people have had similar problems using hdmi at 1680x1050. Now if I got this cable (http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-HDMI-Adapter-Cable-Meters/dp/B001TH7T2U) would the computer recognize it as a dvi cable and I would be able to achieve 1680x1050 resolution? If not I will just get a dvi to vga cable but I would rather not have to resort to analog

Solution
That is mostly concern of driver... try to install driver for your monitor... If this doesn't solve your problem, best if you just get a VGA connector rather than a DVI to HDMI...
