The review on THG failed to compare the noise levels generated by the drive. Can the reviewers get into the habit of measuring this on any product with moving parts (including fans)? It makes a difference to PCs in a lounge setting.

I would say it definitely does also.

I have the Yamaha 16x Drive and I have also used the Plextor 12x in the system I have built for my friend. I would say for the price of the Yamaha and the performance increase of 8mb Cache over 2mb it is worth the slight increase in noise. Overall, it is really not as noisy as people make it out to be.

Are you sure that makes a difference? With JustLink/BurnProof, etc. buffer underruns are basically nonexistant. Is it really faster because of the increased buffer? I wouldn't be surprised.

No, I never said or meant faster, I meant a performace increase. With an 8Mb Buffer, you can basically do whatever you want while your burning and never worry about a bummed cd. Even, Plextor has recognized that 2Mb is not enough and it's lates 24x model now has 4Mb Cache. But, yes I have found it marginally faster than the 16x Plextor, I don't know whether it is the Cache, but I doubt it is. Sorry, for any confusion.

Supposedly, that's what BurnProof and JustLink do (protect you from making coasters), but I'm not sure if it works perfectly or not. Don't have enough experience.
