I talked to a friend yesterday who just happens to have a few spare parts for a type of hand-me-down upgrade.

My PC from early 2007:

MB: ABIT NF-M2 nView AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6150
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813127013

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Windsor 2.2GHz 2 x 512KB 65W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103741

RAM: Patriot DDR2 800 4g

PSU: 350w

Case: IN WIN IW-Z583T.J350BFU2AD
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16811108024

OS: Windows 7 Prof, 64-bit

My buddy is offering to give me his older system that he doesn't use any more because he doesn't have a case for it right now. Plus, he has a new system anyway:

- MSI 790FX-GD70
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130223

- AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz Socket AM3
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727

- GPU: 4870

I've ordered a new case to have much better airflow:

- Case: Antec One Illusion $39
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129182

I also ordered a new PSU: Seasonic X-750w Newegg $119 (down from $189) w/free shipping.

I will give my 2007 system to the kid so, I'll still need to buy the below so, some suggestions would be greatly appreciated:

RAM: DDR3
HD: SATA3
CD/DVD burner combo - Blue-Ray or no?

I plan on a new build after Haswell comes out in the next year or two so, I'd like to be able to use the above for that system when it's time.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

What's your budget?

On the low end:

4GB RAM 1333: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145278 $25
160GB WD Blue: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136075 $65
Cheap DVD Burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136247 $16

On the High end:
8GB RAM 1600: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220570 $43
1TB Samsung Spinpoint: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185 $110
Not sure here, get the same thing unless you will use a BD burner. You could always wait till your new build depending on your budget.

^ Thanks, cranked.

I think I'll go with at least 1600 RAM since Intel stepped it up with Ivy & the z77 mobos. I'm wondering what Haswell's RAM speeds will be up to - if anybody knows let me know. I'd get 8g of DDR3 2000 if Haswell would take it but, will the voltage be okay or not? I'm thinking of the low voltage issues in attempts to overclock with the Ivy & z77 mobos.

I've never had a Blue-Ray player yet at all so, I'm curious if it's worth getting or if I should save the $ and stick to the regular?

I am not 100% sure, but I have heard people talking about DDR4 ram soon. Haswell and the new socket and chipset may be all DDR4 at the time, so whatever you get now may not even work later. I would just get what works best for you now.

As far as the blu-ray drive goes. If you can afford it and think you will use it, get one. If you are just burning CD/DVD, don't waste the money. Either way you go, you will be able to re-use it for your Haswell build.

DDR4 will first come out in server platforms in 2013 but, not for mainstream desktops until 2015. Both Haswell and Broadwell will still have DDR3 RAM until Broadwell's successor in 2015.

"Not until 2015 should we see Intel's 14nm Broadwell successor platform, which will officially bring support for ultra low-voltage, fourth-generation DDR4 modules to desktop users."

http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/26647-intel-to-introduce-ddr4-memory-with-haswell-ex-server-platform

So, I'm hoping to be able to use the same RAM but, voltage could potentially be an issue.

^ So, you don't foresee any potential issues arising by using 1.5v RAM with my upgraded system as well as using that same RAM with a new Haswell system? So, I shouldn't have any problems using DDR3 1600 or 1866 1.5v for either system then?

What do you think these are worth used?

MSI 790FX-GD70 - http://www.msi.com/product/mb/790FX-GD70.html
GPU: HIS 4870 - http://www.hisdigital.com/un/product2-418.shtml
AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4

---

Will I even notice a difference between DDR3 RAM that is 1600 or 2133 or 2400? Will I have issues with 2133 or 2400? Or should I stick with 1600 or 1866? It looks like RAM that is over 2000 has higher voltage, which I assume would cause me issues if I try to use it with a Haswell system. Unless there's newer RAM around that uses less voltage? I guess I can't go over 1.5v if I want to re-use this RAM with Haswell.

I'm just trying to plan ahead to save money down the road.
