Hi, I've been upgrading my computer, I now have 4 gb RAM, and I've ordered a ne video card. I also ordered a new processorwhich was an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - 2.4 GHz Quad-Core LGA 775 1066 MHz FSB CPU. So it came in and I installed it but when I turned the computer back on the screen just stayed black for a little while then the computer shut off. So after doing a little more research a site told me that processor isn't compatible. My slot is an lga775, and the motherboard is a 945gct-m3, so I was just wondering what"s the best processor I can put in this computer?

A Pentium D 945 is probably the best for your system.

The problem is with the Bios on the board. Some 945 boards only support Intel® Pentium® 4 and Intel Pentium D processors. first check to see if there are any updated Bios for your board. However that leaves with the question of what the board will support most likely it will be an Intel Pentium D processor but there is a chance that you can use a dual core Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 or Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, Intel Core 2 Duo E6400, or Intel Core 2 Duo E6300.

Thanks guys for the quick replies, and I have already updated my bios to 4GC3110E. Is there a way to be sure that any of the core 2 duos would work? Or should I just be safe and go with the pentium d 945?
Thanks a lot.

Pentium D 945 runs too hot. I have used the Core 2 Duo E6400 with whatever the latest firmware revision is as well as the Pentium Dual-Core E2140 (the Dell OptiPlex 745 I was going to put the Core 2 Duo in died and the eMachine accepted it. Plus, the Core CPUs (which include the Celeron 420) don't need thermal grease like the Pentium D CPUs do if you have a window air conditioner in the room with it.

VT-x even works on our shared computer (Microsoft's tool says all I need is the right edition of Windows 7 now.)

I love helping others! Woo hoo!
