Is the intel i7 965 xtreme still a top contender?

Based on what? Is it a still a good processor? Yes it is but if you were to build a new system today is it the processor that you should select? No I were to build a new system I would select the Intel® Core™ i7-3930K or the Intel Core i5-2500K for a gaming system.

So if your question is should you upgrade from this processor right now? No I think you are in good shape for a while longer based on how you have it overclocked.
