I'm on a Win XP Pro SP2 Box with all updates applied.
I have been getting a few too many:explorer.exe shell stops with out the
shell restarting and facing a desktop with no Start Menu and no icons. You
can recover to operate by Ctrl+Alt+Deleting and from task manager's
Applications>new run box restarting explorer.exe and iexplore.exe. You can
surf and access programs or of course you could put in a run command to
bring up most programs.
and although it applied to XP SP2 RC2 I decided to see if it would help. I
didn't have the DWORD Value UseDesktopIniCache, so I created it at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and typed in the value of "1" after exporting the reg and setting an SR
point.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the wisdom or lack of it in doing this?

Chad,
This depends for many reasons. This generally has to do with display
drivers. If you have recently done so or ran the MS updates to do so, try a
rollback via the Device Manager.
