Quality of acer laptops

The same as any other vendor with similar internal components. For what you describe it is what is inside that counts. So an HP or Dell or Acer of X (insert your need) performance ratings would do you good.

I would say they are middle of the pack on quality

You will be sadly disapointed if you think that a laptop is simply a portable desktop.
