The computer won't post i can't figure out why. got a new PSU and tested the gpu it works.
the system turns on but the monitor does not. no reaction to the monitor as though it's the gpu not working.

System info:
Gigabyte P-31 ES3G
intel duo core2 (2.4ghz)
Ram - Samsung 1GB - M378T2953EZ3 (2 sticks)
ATI HD 4850

I have to assume it's the ram not working. But, i can't be sure.
I've replaced the ram and tried a different stick that i pulled out of a computer that was running fine.
I can't be sure cause the person I let borrow the computer had attempted to replace the heat sink and loaded so much thermal paste it was over the edges and i recall it getting a very small amount underneath.
If the cpu or motherboard where affected would the computer even start up as it has been?

Also, if it is the ram where can i buy decent 2gb sticks of ram that are worth buying. I won't pay 45$ or 30$ per stick of ddr2 memory when i can get DDR3 for that price. it seems very BS to me.
I looked at ebay but i don't know enough about ram to pick it out from all that is there.

i'm not even finding anything on google about this that is working... could it be the motherboard battery?

I'd like to add i was trying to fiddle with it a bit ago i hear what sounds like the gpu throttling. The fan is going high and low. i think the cpu fan was doing it too but that one is very quiet.
