Hi ,

I see Pentium D Smithfield for 340 USD and
I see Pentium 4 640 Prescott for 230 USD

What is the exact difference between these processors phically and performance-wise. Will they run on the same board , or do they both require different boards...

Thank you
Ralph

Where do you see it?

Pentium D's are multi-core and the Pentium 4's are not. Performance advantages between the chips will depend on system utilization.

Dual core with HT is already out its called a 840EE...
system utilisation: heavy multitasking, the Pentium D is a wiser choice...If you mainly use one CPU intensive application at the time, th 6xx will suit you just fine and will be faster in games!

Asus P4P800DX, P4C 2.6ghz@3.25ghz, 2X512 OCZ PC4000 3-4-4-8, MSI 6800Ultra stock, 2X30gig Raid0

I wouldn't expect the lower tier Intel DC CPUs to get HT. Even with HT, the 840EE barely beats the top AMD DC.
