Hello,
I currently own a 512mb 4870 and it's starting to fail so I'm looking at the 7850. I'm not very familiar with GPU Architectures and I'm confused that the 7850 only has around 1024 stream processors and my 4870 has 800. This doesn't seem much of a jump to me? Are stream processors less meaningful now or something? Also a friend says you can overclock the 7850 it counteracts the low number of processors.

Could you give me some advice?

you can't judge those cards only by the number of stream processors. There are a lot of other factors to consider. My advice? get the 7850, you will feel the difference...a lot of it...
For easy benchmark:

note that the above link only differentiate by performance...but remember that there's other things not related to graphic performance such as lower heat, electricity needed, fan loudness, etc...

Hello & Welcome.

Don't try to compare 2 different architecture you'll get confused, look at the overall performance. The strength of the GPU not only in stream processors, also the # of texture units, memory rate, core & memory closk, # of transistors.......

The HD 7850 is almost 1.5x time faster than your HD 4870. What's your monitor's resolution and total system specs?

4870 itself isn't included in this chart but 5770 matches it pretty much exactly. 5770 gets 43% and 7850 79% (of the performance of a factory OCed 7870)

The 7870 outperforms the 7950 and costs less

It doesn't. Difference between HD 7950 and HD 7870 is 1% according to the benches of toms. And it's 9%-10% according to other reviewers. But as you said it's a good value for money, but what makes me not recommending it is that most of the members here are complaining about different brands of HD 7870s.
