Saving desktop settings

My son has started to play a game that works only with lower resolution
settings. This reorders the carefully grouped icons on my desktop. I've
looked in XP SP2 Help, searched Google, but can't find anything that tells me
how to preserve the order of the icons. Can someone help please?

Hi Miles,

I would suggest giving him his own profile. If that isn't in the cards:

Follow these steps if you want to switch the display temporarily while the
game or program is running.

On your desktop or on the Start menu, right-click the game or other program
that you want to run in 256 colors, and then click Properties. Click the
Compatibility tab. Select the Run in 256 colors check box.

Run in 640x480 screen resolution check box. Your screen resolution will
revert to its previous resolution when you close the program.

The Compatibility tab is available only for programs or games located on
your computer's hard disk. It is not available if the program is stored on a
floppy disk, compact disk, or a network.

Switch Display:

Start/Programs/Game in Question/Properties/Compatibility Tab/Select 256 or
640x480.

Added info: Don't save settings on exit, line: 54 (right hand side)

Many thanks Kelly. I've always shunned having separate profiles for family
members. We started doing that with our first XP system, but maintenance and
security seemed to become much more complicated, so we gave up. Maybe it's
time to make an exception on this system.
I'll try your alternative first.

Here is just what you are looking for. It installs some additional MS
'Layout' files that aren't downloaded by default which then allows you to
save and restore desktop icon positioning:

Most welcome, Miles and good luck. But just a note, Security updates are
system wide (which include all added profiles). As for maintenance, Current
User via the registry will come into play from time to time, but can be
quickly conquered and is not complicated. If you are needing more info or
guidance, feel free to write. )
