Hi,

I have a 7210 and have just bought a serial bought a data cable and ringtone
disk on ebay. I have this plugged into COM1 but Nokia PC Suite will not
detect the phone it just makes the display on the phone fade out. The
battery is fully charged - any ideas what is wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help - I really want to get some of these
ringtones on my phone!

Martin

Nokia PC suite will only work with the genuine DKU-5 usb cable or
infrared.

PC Suite will only work with IR, BlueTooth or a genuine Nokia cable.
I suspect you're using a cheaper third-party data cable as the Nokia
cable for this phone is USB.

You'll need to use a third-party application such as MobiMB or
purchase a genuine Nokia cable.

I recall there being an additional com-port install application that
has to be installed before PC Suite. In any event, I tried it with my
6820 and a 3rd party cable and it didn't work. The two connections
that work flawlessly are infrared and Bluetooth. With IrDA, though,
you may have to tweak the settings if you are using Win2K.

The Nokia data cable is a USB-COM Serial converter. It plugs into
your USB port but is referred to as a COM port in the PC Suite
software.

OK, it can be done. I just did it last weekend--that is, I got a
third party DKU-5 cable working with my WinXP system, Nokia 6800, and
Nokia PC Suite. Darned if I have a good how-to for it, but if I had
to do it again, this is what I would try first:

Install the drivers for the cable that came with it, not the drivers
on the Nokia site. That way, you will go into Device Manager later
and see the cable (in my case, a PL232 or something like that, it's at
home right now) listed specifically. I would do this without the
cable connected or Windows will go, "What's this? What's this?"

Now reboot. Connect the cable. When Windows sees it and wants a
driver for the cable, go to where you put the drivers. Windows won't
find it on its own even though you already installed the drivers. It
may be necessary for you to find the drivers via Google and have them
handy for this step, if you only got an installation for the drivers
and not the separate drivers themselves.

If this goes successfully you should see the cable listed under Device
Manager in the Com Port section. I think this is a USB to serial
cable, right? Now make sure the cable is using a com port that
nothing else wants, like in my case Com 3. You can edit that in the
Advanced area on one of the tabs of the cable's entry in Device
Manager.

Now, connect the phone and install Nokia PC Suite. This will put a
little icon in your systray, a green phone. If it has a red X on it,
it can't see your phone. Double click this connection manager icon
and you want to select the serial option icon which is the one on the
left of the three icons. Now go into advanced and make sure it's
using the com port you used in Device Manager. If all goes well, the
window will update and show your phone model.

If Nokia PC Suite doesn't see your phone right away, keep in mind that
even after a successful setup you will have to reboot with the phone
connected if you've disconnected the cable and/or the phone. At least
it doesn't delete the entry for the cable in the Device Manager every
time. So try rebooting.

At one point my 6800 was showing in the Com ports AND in the
"phone/modem" listings in Device Manager. I had to delete it from
the "phone/modem" listings as this seemed to prevent it from working
properly.

If anyone goes through this and can map out a "how to" please do so!
I googled and found several "how tos" and not one of them worked for
me.

Hopefully this message will save others some aggravation. If there
are steps I've left out or corrections to be made, please respond!
