I would say very little, you would not be able to see the bottleneck. An i3 2120 can run a GTX 670 fine and the 965 is around the i3 2120(you may need a bit of an overclock to be equal). That being said the GTX 670 is better than the HD 7950 and so the 965 should cause little bottleneck for your video card.

Incorrect, he needs to overclock to 4ghz to almost equal the i3.

At stock he will see a bottleneck.

I know for a fact it can't be 4 ghz, I was saying in my post maybe a little bit of bottlenecking. That meant very minimal at the most because of the CPU. I mean maybe 100-200mhz would help in GPU demanding games but 4 GHZ is what you want when you want to burn the i3 2120.

Here is evidence of the general performance of both CPUs.

Generally the phenom is better but in terms of gaming i3s naturally do better but they are not far apart.

Thanks for all the response guys! I've been trying to decide between an i3 3220 with 7870 and a phenom ii x4 965 and 7950. I'm going with the latter now, I think.

The main reason I don't want to overclock is that an aftermarket cooler further complicates what will be my first build (not by much, I know, but its just another part to worry about on my first time) and also that 20-30 bucks for a cooler starts to push the 7950 out of my budget range

Just to clarify since there are discrepancies above, there should be little to no bottleneck as claimed by several of us. I claimed a little bit of a bottleneck just to on the safe side but still its not a visible bottleneck so you should have fun with the Phenom 965.

A 7770 is a midrange card.

A 7950 is top end stuff.

Generally speaking, that website sucks, no offense intended. You should look at tom's own benches.

At 4ghz trade blows, at stock not so much...
